Nouadhibou,Mauritania

A graveyard in simple terms is a more refined term for burial grounds. Ships graveyard refers to those places where ships are left for disintegration.

Nouadhibou, a major metropolis in the poverty-ridden North-west African country of Mauritania, is considered as one of the largest ship graveyards in the world with hundreds of ships abandoned together.

Bay of Nouadhibou, Located in Mauritania, this passage of water is regarded unequivocally across the world as being the world’s largest graveyard.
However unlike the other mentioned ship graveyards, the Bay of Nouadhibou was used a ship dumping ground mainly on account of the avarice of the Mauritian authorities who allowed uncensored dumping of ships in the Bay.

There were several sources of the rotting ships. Mauritanians would purchase older ships from international shippers, hoping to run their own shipping business and compete.
But the older ships were not economically competitive. Maintenance costs and repairs were too much to bear; when they went bankrupt the ships were abandoned.

According to statistics, more than 300 vessels can be found in this dumping ground.
However shippers from around the world were sending old ships on their final voyage to Mauritania.
