Biggest single idea in the History of Thought

"The Origin of Species"

Charles Darwin's "The Origin of Species" first published in 1859,has been called the biggest single idea in the history of Thought.

Origin of Species is considered to be the foundation of evolutionary biology. Its full title was On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life.

Darwin's theory of evolution is based on key facts and the inferences drawn from them, which biologist Ernst Mayr summarised as follows:
  • Every species is fertile enough that if all offspring survived to reproduce the population would grow (fact).
  • Despite periodic fluctuations, populations remain roughly the same size (fact).
  • Resources such as food are limited and are relatively stable over time (fact)        Individuals in a population vary significantly from one another (fact).
  • Much of this variation is inheritable (fact).
  • Individuals less suited to the environment are less likely to survive and less likely to reproduce; individuals more suited to the environment are more likely to survive and more likely to reproduce and leave their inheritable traits to future generations, which produces the process of natural selection (inference).
  • This slowly effected process results in populations changing to adapt to their environments, and ultimately, these variations accumulate over time to form new species (inference)
Darwin's "The Origin of Species"was sold out on its day of publication.
Even though this book agitated the christian world because the theory of Evolution stands against the teachings of Holy Bibal, he was considered as a honourable person and after his death he was buried with full christian honours in Westminster Abbey.

Greatest Psychological Novel Ever

-Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy-

The novel Anna Karenina by Tolstoy has a universal value, because it portraits a huge picture about 19th century Russian society as well as the characteristics of different human beings.

In this book Tolstoy creates a lot of immortal characters ever created in the history of literature, using his powerful imagination.

This great author expresses his own thoughts and character intellectually through the character "Levin" in this novel.

Anna Karenina still considered as the greatest psychological novel ever created in the history of literature.

A book I read resently

-A Thousand Splendid Suns-

A Thousand Splendid Suns is at once an incredible chronicle of thirty years of Afghan history and a deeply moving story of family, friendship, faith, and the salvation to be found in love.
Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss and by fate.
As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them-in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul-they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation.
With heart-wrenching power and suspense, Hosseini shows how a woman's love for her family can move her to shocking and heroic acts of self-sacrifice, and that in the end it is love, or even the memory of love, that is often the key to survival.
A stunning accomplishment, A Thousand Splendid Suns is a haunting, heartbreaking, compelling story of an unforgiving time, an unlikely friendship, and an indestructible love.

An interesting book I read recently

"A Fine Balance" by Rohinton Mistry

This magnificent novel captures all the cruelty and corruption, dignity and heroism, of India, time is 1975, is an unnamed city by the sea.

The government has just declared a State of Emergency, in whose upheavals four strangers--a spirited widow, a young student uprooted from his idyllic hill station, and two tailors who have fled the caste violence of their native village--will be thrust together, forced to share one cramped apartment and an uncertain future.

As the characters move from distrust to friendship and from friendship to love, A Fine Balance creates an enduring panorama of the human spirit in an inhuman state.

Lincoln's Biography

"Lincoln the Unknown" by Dale Carnegie is the Greatest Biography I've ever read.
This book beautifully portraits how a son of a poor hunter became the 16th president of the united states and how many obstacles he had to pass through until he abolish slavery in the country.
